Get's you outraged, doesnt it? How dare the government promote heroin to our kids! It's easy to be emotional and allow the media decide your opinions based on a 30 second snippet. How can you go wrong? All the facts are there right? We got heroin, we got schools and we got syringes! It's all bad! Nothing needs to be discussed, case closed. This will now be stopped thanks to channel 7. The government was wrong, our TV was right and so are we! Yay for us. We have saved the children! Hold on. I wish life was this simple. But let's get out of fantasy land for a moment and get into visualisation land. Imagine. You have grown up at a school that you heard a few years ago the government stopped a heroin house being opened near by. The children grow up not having much more info than this (in regards to real life experience with observing heroin users ). These kids never get to walk past the heroin house that was banned. The parents were never forced to explain what it is and why people go in there, because remember, smart mums and channel 7 stopped it from being built. Out of sight and out of mind. The childrens curiosity dissolved the day that 30 second snippet aired, right? We saved the kids from heroin didnt we? Will these kids use Heroin? Maybe? Maybe not. Imagine. You have grown up at a school where some of the kids on the way home, walked past a syringe exchange house. A school meeting about this house is held every year where kids are provided pamphlets about the health problems associated with drugs. Usualy, children 'rebel' against drug warnings. Kids smoke marujuana and drink alcohol. So even when the school warns of the dangers of heroin, they take these warnings with a pinch of salt. Don't forget, curiosity killed the cat. But remember, this school has known registered long term drug addicts hanging out near by. They are thin. They walk in alone, with therir heads down. The skin on these peoples faces is sunken in. Their eyes are soulless. A slave to a needle. These are the most broken and ill people in modern society. They are sick and look no where near as jolly as their art teacher does. Impressions on children are very strong and last forever, especially if an impression is left early on. Kids talk. Kids are smart. Kids are very observent and easily influenced at a young age. These children were warned about heroin by their parents. They were warned about heroin by their school. They then saw addicts be a slave to this location looking like walking death. Knowledge is no load to carry. These kids will most likely never touch heroin. Or at least, know where it may lead. But, the school where channel 7 saved our kids? Well, that now lies in the hands of curiosity and hoping that they always have a trustworthy relationship with current affair programs. Children are curious about the unknown and want to experience these things. Do not make Heroin the unknown, for curiosity not only kills cats. What truly kills children is parents impulsive behaviour. If we are a slave to our emotions and base our society on these emotions, we set the stage for emotions controlling your kids lives, forever. If we make decisions based on fear, we will never be free of it. Then drug use will continue to increase, like it has the past 30 years. The media is not here to protect you. But you are here to protect your children. Has being angry got society anywhere so far? The next time you are outraged about anything, have a sit down.
